The contribution of metamorphic petrology to understanding lithosphere evolution and geodynamics

چکیده

In the early 1980s, evidence that crustal rocks had reached temperatures >1000 C at normal lower crustal pressures while others had followed low thermal gradients to record pressures characteristic of mantle conditions began to appear in the literature, and the importance of melting in the tectonic evolution of orogens and metamorphicemetasomatic reworking of the lithospheric mantle was realized. In parallel, new developments in instrumentation, the expansion of in situ analysis of geological materials and increases in computing power opened up new fields of investigation. The robust quantification of pressure (P), temperature (T) and time (t) that followed these advances has provided reliable data to benchmark geodynamic models and to investigate secular change in the thermal state of the lithosphere as registered by metamorphism through time. As a result, the last 30 years have seen significant progress in our understanding of lithospheric evolution, particularly as it relates to Precambrian

Metamorphic evolution along the slab/ mantle interface within subduction zones

One view of the metamorphic subduction system supposes that coupled deformation and prograde/metasomatic reaction between the chemically enriched slab and the depleted mantle wedge promotes the formation of complexly hybridized lithologies along the slab/mantle interface. This type of model is based upon direct observations of the structure and petrology of high-P/T metamorphic complexes (e.g.,...

Evidence from ophiolites, blueschists, and ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic terranes that the modern episode of subduction tectonics began in Neoproterozoic time

Earth is the only known planet with subduction zones and plate tectonics, and this fact demonstrates that special conditions are required for this mode of planetary heat loss. Sinking of cold, dense lithosphere in subduction zones is the principal plate-driving force, so plate tectonics could not have begun until Earth cooled sufficiently to allow lithosphere to collapse into the underlying ast...

Petrology and mineral chemistry in the Calc-silicates of the Deh-salm metamorphic complex, East of Lut block: evidence of progressive metamorphism to the granulite facies

The Deh-Salm Metamorphic Complex (DMC) is composed of metapelite, metabasite, metaperidotite, and calc-silicate rocks and is one of the few outcrops of the Lut block’s basement which emerged near to the Sistan suture zone. In the eastern part of the Deh-Salm metamorphic complex, the calc-silicate and marble appeared in the form of elongated tectonic lenses that have been metamorphosed in simila...

Geodynamic Regimes and Tectonic Settings for Metamorphism: Relationship to the Supercontinent Cycle

Metamorphism associated with orogenesis provides a mineral record that may be inverted to yield ambient apparent thermal gradients. On modern Earth, tectonic settings with lower thermal gradients are characteristic of subduction zones whereas those with higher thermal gradients are characteristic of backarcs and orogenic hinterlands. The duality of thermal environments reflects the asymmetry of...

The Hezar Igneous Complex (HIC) in the south-eastern part of Urumieh-Dokhtar magmatic arc, is the most prominent magmatic feature in the Kerman Porphyry Copper Belt, that understanding magmatic evolution of which may shed light on the tectonomagmatic development of this less-studied part of an important magmatic arc in the Neotethys realm. The HIC has been developed in the the intersection of t...
